Human Trafficking Policy Presentation Day
Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs, Loeb Building, D199, Carleton University
Monday, November 19, 2012, 11:30 to 14:30
Dear Friends,
As you know this semester I have been teaching a very bright group of 4th year undergraduate students at the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs at Carleton University. Throughout the fall, they have been examining three questions of Canadian policy touching on the issue of human trafficking:
1. Would the adoption of the "Nordic model " of law relating to prostitution enhance gender equality and diminish trafficking for sexual exploitation in Canada?
2. How should Canada deal fairly with migrant workers to avoid trafficking for labour exploitation and “trafficking-like" situations of exploitation?
3. In the age of "medical tourism" what steps must Canada take to comply with the spirit and letter of the prohibition on organ trafficking?
The students have split up into three groups, each considering one of the questions listed above.
On Monday, October 15, 2012, the students heard from three experts on the topic of human trafficking. Kimberley Mansfield (member of the Ottawa Coalition to End Human Trafficking) spoke about the “Nordic Model” of law and trafficking for sexual exploitation. Karl Flecker (of the Canadian Labour Congress) spoke about migrant workers and labour exploitation. David Kilgour (former Member of Parliament) spoke about organ trafficking. Following their opening remarks, each of the three experts spent 45 minutes in a break-out conversation with the group focusing on their particular theme.
On Monday, November 19, 2012, between 11:30 and 14:30, the students will present their research findings and recommendations. Thank you for volunteering to represent PACT-Ottawa at this presentation. These burgeoning experts on the theory and practice of human rights are providing a foundation for PACT's policy recommendations in the future. Therefore, it is appropriate that PACT representatives listen, ask questions and engage in discussion with the students about their work.
