Peebles Case
Summary
Human trafficking charges have been laid for the first time in Manitoba after a 21 year old woman was forced into prostitution. In September 2010 the victim moved to Winnipeg from northern Manitoba on her own and was befriended by the accused who stole the victim's property, including clothes and identification, confined and took control of her. Then the victim was assaulted and for a few weeks forced onto the street to perform sex acts for money, which the accused kept. The victim was given food, shelter, illicit drugs and alcohol. Manitoba Police are still looking for other victims.
Theresa Peebles, a 38-year-old woman, is the first Manitoban to be charged under federal legislation introduced in 2005. She was charged in September 2011 with three counts of trafficking in persons, forcible confinement and assault. The trafficking charges relate to harbouring, financial gain and withholding identification documents.
